Volleyball Physics of Sports Video
Our Video: Our group decided to look at a Volleyball hit. We made our movie using imovie. We looked at professional clips and a clip of Emma hitting the ball to find calculations that would help San Marin athletes play Volleyball.
Our Calculations: The Volleyball court we looked at was 59 feet long and 30 feet wide. The net was 8 feet tall. The volley ball traveled 12 feet and it was hit 8 feet in the air. The ball was in the air for 0.25 seconds. The volleyball had a mass of 0.27 kg.
Force of Impact: A force is any push or pull on an object. When Emma hit the ball the force of the impact was 287.78 newtons or 64.68 pounds. The ball was in contact with her hand for 0.016 seconds. We used the equation mv=ft to find the force. We plugged in our numbers and solved for f to find the force of the impact. Vertical Velocity: The vertical velocity is the rate of covered distance on a vertical axis. We found this by using the equation Vvert=Agt. We used our time to find the vertical velocity of the ball which was 10.16 meters per second. Horizontal Velocity: The horizontal velocity is the rate of covered distance on a horizontal axis. We found this by using the equation Vhoriz=dhoriz/t. The distance was 12 feet and we used the time to find our horizontal velocity which was 14.63 meters per second. Total Velocity: Velocity is the rate of covered distance in a certain direction. We used our vertical and horizontal velocities to find the total velocity. We used a^2+b^2=c^2 to find a total velocity of 17.8 meters per second or 17.8 miles per hour. Angle of the Ball: The angle the ball was hit was 70 degrees. Acceleration: Acceleration is the rate of change of velocity. We found an acceleration of 71.2 meters per second squared by using the equation velocity divided by time. |
Reflection: Our project was very successful. We were able to all work on the movie by switching videos and pictures between all of our phones. One person would edit the movie and the others would get new videos and pictures for the movie.
What went well was we were able to edit the movie on multiple devices. We designed different parts of the project in other programs like google slides and google docs. We developed a solid script and we had good calculations. Some things did not go well. Jake and I did not know how to play Volleyball so the clips were hard to record. We had trouble tossing the ball to Emma and it took multiple tries. We also had trouble with the voice recordings. I was hard to get everyone to say information because there were limited things to say. What I could have done better was including everyone. Every member of our group was not always working and it was difficult for everyone to be involved. There were times when we were sitting around doing nothing when we could have been working. Another thing I could have done better was encouraging my group members. When we found a problem or messed up I could encourage my group members instead of getting mad or frustrated. I learned many new skills. I learned how to work with imovie and YouTube. I learned to edit videos. I learned a lot more about creating movies and creating voice overs. I also learned that I am not good at dividing the work. I need to improve on giving out tasks when we are doing nothing. |
