Our Presentation:
Summary:
In this project we invested a species that is currently endangered. Our group choose the tiger. We looked at topics like human impacts on the tigers and how biodiversity affects tigers. After our research we decided whether or not tigers will go extinct.
For this project our group made a slide, a Kahoot, an animation, and a music video about the affects of humans on tigers. It explains how deforestation and hunting will eventually lead to the tigers extinction. The video warns us about the affects of human hunting on tigers. The Kahoot quizzed the audience of our presentation on relevant tiger extinction information. Finally, the animation showed what would happen if humans attacked tigers by cutting trees or polluting.

Video Lyrics:
[Intro: Izzy Cozier]
'Cause you know in the old days
They could hunt the animals they wanted to hunt
They could shoot them without consequence
We should tell hunters today:
"Hey! Don’t kill the tigers!”
[Chorus: Derek Dela Cruz]
I killed a tiger yo, I loved it (I loved it)
I killed a tiger yo, I loved it (I loved it)
[Verse 1: Derek Dela Cruz]
I killed a tiger yo, I loved it (loved it, loved it)
The tigers are all dorks, McLovin (dork)
(McLovin; ooh, ooh, ooh)
I just hunted a tiger, (cat)
Killed that cat up out in India (India)
Then I shot two here’s some trivia
I want bones, medicine to heal ya' (uh-uh, woo)
And the populous gettin' larger
Burning forests, stealing water (water, yeah)
All the tigers needing prey
Deer pig buffalo antelope oh hey (nom!)
Humans kill prey starving tigers
Oof, heck, they can hide (big rip)
I don’t care I want the trophies (bling!)
Boom, shoot, got the head (nice)
[Chorus: Derek Dela Cruz & Derek Dela Cruz]
I killed a tiger yo, I loved it (I loved it, oof!)
I killed a tiger yo, I loved it (I loved it)
[Interlude: Derek Dela Cruz]
Don’t kill the tigers yo...
Biodiversity is important in life
Why you killin’ all the tigers when they’re endangered and control their prey’s population?
Don’t kill the tigers y--
[Verse 2: Derek Dela Cruz]
Don’t kill the cats, don’t smack them with bats (whoop!)
Don’t kill the cats, don’t smack them with bats (whoop!)
Don’t kill the cats, don’t smack them with bats (whoop!)
Don’t kill the cats, don’t smack them with bats (whoop!)
Don’t kill the cats, don’t smack them with bats
Protect their habitats, go stop bureaucrats
Need water to hydrate, please be a diplomat
How do you stop this? Don’t shoot and don’t hate!
Don’t kill the cats, don’t need the head piece
Let them hide in peace, let them live in peace
Let them feast in peace, let them thrive in peace
Protect the darn tigers, let the numbers increase (crease, crease)
[Chorus: Derek Dela Cruz]
Don’t kill the tigers yo, we’d love it (we’d love it)
Don’t kill the tigers yo, we’d love it (we’d love it)

Content:
- Evolution: Evolution is when a species changes and experiences a change in the gene pool. Evolution can be caused by five things: gene flow, mutations, adaptations, smaller populations, and non random mating. All living things evolve due to these five factors.
- Gene flow: When individuals move in and out of an area the gene pool is changed. When a tiger from one area moves to another area new traits appear. The tiger that moved brings all its new traits and introduces them to the new environment changing the gene pool.
- Mutations: Mutations randomly occur and create changes. When a mutation occurs in a species a new trait is created like a resistance. A mutation in a mosquito can lead to a bug spray resistant gene. Scientists observed this when DTT was used to fight mosquito that later became resistant to DTT.
- Adaptations: Nature helps those who have adapted to there environments and hurts those who are not. Tigers have adapted to their environment by having stripes for camouflage. Species are forced to adapt to their environments and surroundings. Without human intervention, tigers cannot adapt to humans ways and they will die off.
- Smaller Populations: When a small population is re-established into a large population there is a lack of genetic variation. All the members share a common ancestor from a small group so the gene pool has a small amount of variation.
- Non Random Mating: When animals select their mates this creates non-random mating. They can be selected by looks or mating rituals. This lets the stronger individuals in the population mate. Tigers have a mating ritual where they roar and build trust. The stronger and healthier tigers are selected to mate.
- Extinction: Extinction is when all living members of a species are killed of. For example, the Bali tiger has no living members left so it would be considered extinct. Tigers are very close to extinction and a third of the tiger species have already gone extinct.
- Survival of the Fittest: Survival of the fittest is the idea that the most fit individuals will survive. The fit individuals of a species are those who have the favorable traits that help them survive in the wild. A tiger with better camouflage will survive because it has the favorable trait making it fit.
- Natural Selection: Natural selection is when the species with favorable traits survive and they individuals without favorable traits die off. Natural selection lets the fit individuals survive. Tigers that are able to camouflage with the grass will catch more prey than those who cannot blend in. Those tigers will then survive because they have the favorable trait.
- Artificial Selection: When humans select the desirable traits of a species instead of nature it is called artificial selection. For example, in our bacteria lab we selected certain traits that would survive instead of nature.
- Biodiversity: Biodiversity is the diversity of all different types of animals living together in an ecosystem. Biodiversity is very important because many different species depend on each other. For example, tigers depend on animals like deer for food. Tigers also have an important role of limiting the population size of their prey. Without biodiversity the ecosystems would fall apart.
- Speciation: Speciation is the creation of new species. There are many types of speciation but the most important to tigers include:
- Sympatric speciation is when a new species evolves in the same environment as the ancestral species. The hawthorn and apple flies both share a common ancestor but they have evolved to be different species. They evolved living in the same environment but they ate different food allowing a new species to be created.
- Allopatric speciation is when a species is created by a barrier allowing species to evolve in two different areas. For example, tigers have nine different subspecies. They have evolved to the environment they live in so they all have different traits due to there separation.
- Behavioral isolation is when the individuals of a species select their mates. Tigers have mating rituals which lets the females select which male to mate with. This allows for the stronger and healthier males to mate leading to a stronger population overall.
Reflection:
Our overall time manage for this project went well. We gave ourselves enough time to finish our research. After the research we were able to plan our project and practice the presentation enough so that we were prepared. One part that didn't work as well was following our Gantt chart. We ended up not needed the planned ten days of time so our schedule got off. We were not able to follow the chart because we completed the project quicker than we expected.
I leaned that more time isn't always the best. We had extra time that lead to unproductive days a the end of the project when we had finished. We had to much time to finish the task so we wasted some time. I also found that adding to much could be bad. We had an animation, video, Kahoot, and slide show. We ended up running out of time so we couldn't show our Kahoot.
Some peaks include the extra parts of our presentation we were able to add. We had extra time so we were able to add an animation and a video. It allowed us to improve our presentation and make it more interesting. A pit was when we were trying to decide on how to fix the audio quality of our video. We went back and forth trying to decide how the video should sound. We could have been more prepared on how the video sounded.
I could have improved on my communication with the rest of my team. We each had a specific part of the project to work on so I sometimes went off and did my own part. I can work as a team more and communicate better next time. I can also work on not procrastinating and staying on task.
