Concert Reflection:
On December 15, 2019 our jazz band played three songs at Trek Winery. They were Whodunnit, Alice and Wonderland, and Zebrano. During this performance and during preparation for this performance I developed better communications skills. For my 4th trumpet part, I share music with another trumpet player. Before the concert, I had given my music to the other 4th trumpet player so he could use it at a jazz festival I was not able to go to. I had to use communication skills to make sure that I got the music back before the concert so that I would be able to play my part. The trumpet section also has to use mutes on Whodunnit. Our entire section had to communicate so that we were all able to bring the right type of mute and ensure that there would be enough mutes for our jazz band and the other jazz band. I learned that communication is an important skill to effectively utilize and a lack of good communication will lead to less success in concerts or other aspects of life.
Collaboration was also an important skill I developed throughout this concert. The trumpets in our band are an entire section and we must be able to work together if we want our section to sound the best. We used collaboration in our section daily when we tuned. We had to work together to ensure that every member of our section was sounding good and prepared to play. I also used collaboration when playing at the concert. During the concert I was listening to the rest of the trumpet section so that I could blend in with the other 4th trumpet player and the section as a whole. I learned that it is sometimes best to listen to those around you instead of focusing on yourself. What I did good throughout this performance was making sure I was ready to play my part. I made some mistakes but for the most part I knew how to play my music and I was able to perform successfully. I can improve by doing some extra practice at home for the next concert. My performance could have been better if I practiced a few of the parts I messed up on at home. In the future this will be my focus when preparing for a festival or a concert.
